New Year's Eve in the Algarve 2026/27: Albufeira and the other parties
Contents
New Year's Eve is the one night of winter when the Algarve fills up. Nearly every town on the coast puts a stage in its main square or on the beach, books a well known Portuguese act, and sets off fireworks at midnight. All of the council parties are free. The biggest one by a distance is in Albufeira, but it is not the only good one, and which town you pick mostly comes down to how big a crowd you want.
Several towns have already announced their 2026/27 line-ups, which is early. The rest usually publish between mid November and mid December, so for those we give last year's programme as a guide. If you are here for the whole holiday, our guide to Christmas in the Algarve covers the weeks before.

Albufeira New Year: Carpe Nox on Praia dos Pescadores
Albufeira has built its New Year into a national event. The stage goes up on Praia dos Pescadores, the beach in front of the old town, the concert is shown on Portuguese television, and the council now describes it as the biggest New Year's Eve party in the country. Hotel occupancy in the town was above 90% last year.
A note on the name, because it catches people out. The party is named after the year being welcomed. Carpe Nox 2026 was the night of 31 December 2025. The one you want is Albufeira Carpe Nox 2027, on the night of Thursday 31 December 2026.
What is confirmed so far for 2026/27:
- 31 December, 22:00: Calema on the main stage, then a midnight show, then DJ Nox.
- 1 January: Carolina Deslandes plays at the first sunset of the year. Last year the New Year's Day concert was at 17:00, and sunset on 1 January is at about 17:26.
- Local press reports that the midnight show will use more than a thousand drones to tell a story in the sky, and that the programme starts on 29 December with the medieval fair in the village of Paderne. Wait for the council's full programme to confirm both.
To give you an idea of the scale, last year's midnight show had Silence 4 on the main stage, a second stage with a DJ set timed to stunt planes and paramotor pilots, lasers and fireworks, and 200 giant illuminated balls released over the crowd. The year before it was Xutos & Pontapés with fireworks launched from the water and a drone show. There has also been a street food market near the beach in each of the last few years, and Olhos de Água, a few kilometres east, had its own smaller party with fireworks.
On crowd numbers, the council has quoted estimates of more than 230,000 people for past editions. Those are estimates, not counts, and for last year it said only that there were thousands. The council has not published road closures or parking arrangements for this year, so check its website in the last week of December, and do not count on driving into the old town that night. If you want to be close, book accommodation you can walk back to.
Other towns, west to east
Lagos
Lagos holds its party in Praça do Infante, by the river. Nininho Vaz Maia is the headliner for 2026/27. Last year Pedro Abrunhosa went on at 22:30 and the fireworks at midnight were billed as some of the longest in the Algarve.
Portimão, Praia da Rocha and Alvor
Portimão uses its riverside. The 2026/27 line-up is not out yet. Last year there were two nights of concerts, and at midnight an 11 minute fireworks and laser show was fired from seven platforms on the river Arade. There were also fireworks at Praia da Rocha and in Alvor, so you can watch from the beach if you would rather skip the concert.
Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra
These are the small, friendly ones. Carvoeiro's party is on the little beach in the middle of the village, and last year it ran from 22:30 to 03:00 with a band, fireworks set to music at midnight and DJs after. It is run by the parish with the council of Lagoa. Armação de Pêra does something similar on its fishermen's beach, with a live band, fireworks at midnight and a DJ until 03:00.
Quarteira and Vilamoura
Quarteira is the free party for the Loulé area, and it has confirmed two strong nights: Plutónio on 30 December and Pedro Abrunhosa on 31 December, with fireworks at midnight. This year it moves to Jardim Filipe Jonas because of building work at the market by the seafront. There is also a 5 km and 10 km run through Quarteira and Vilamoura on 29 December.
Vilamoura has no free council party that we could find. The night there is about the hotel and casino galas, covered below, and you get the fireworks over the marina.
Faro and Olhão
Faro puts its stage in Jardim Manuel Bívar, next to the marina. Last year it was Manga Limão and the fado singer Sara Correia, with fireworks set to music at midnight. In Olhão the party is in the garden by the waterfront, and the fireworks go up over the Ria Formosa. Last year's headliner there was Diogo Piçarra.
Tavira, Monte Gordo and Vila Real de Santo António
Tavira parties in Praça da República from 22:00 to 04:00, and the fireworks are launched by the river. Monte Gordo, the beach resort next to Vila Real de Santo António, has had bigger names than you would expect for its size: Fernando Daniel last year, Calema the year before, with fireworks over the bay. If you are near the border, remember that Spain is an hour ahead, so midnight in Ayamonte comes an hour before midnight in Monte Gordo. With a bit of planning you can do both.
Gala dinners at hotels and casinos
If standing on a beach until 01:00 is not your idea of a good night, the alternative is a gala dinner. For 2025/26, prices across the region ran from about €99 for a buffet dinner to more than €420 for a full gala, and five star packages with a room started at around €700 per person. The luxury hotels were about 92% booked by the middle of December, so this is something to reserve in October or November.
The three Solverde casinos, in Vilamoura, Praia da Rocha and Monte Gordo, all sold a dinner with a show last year. Casino Vilamoura was €220 per person with dinner, drinks, supper and the show. Prices for this year have not been published.
Hotels with a New Year's Eve gala
These are the hotel galas that have been announced or that ran last year. Rooms on 31 December often come as a package with the dinner, so check what is included before you compare prices.
- Tivoli Marina Vilamoura. The only 2026/27 gala with full details so far. Mariza headlines at the congress centre next to the hotel. Welcome cocktail at 19:00, gala dinner at 20:00, concert at 22:30, countdown and fireworks at midnight, then an open bar and supper. €495 per adult for a standard seat and €1,000 for the front row. Children aged 3 to 11 pay €165 or €300, and under 2s are free. Room packages include the gala and brunch on New Year's Day.
- Hotel Algarve Casino, Praia da Rocha. Last year it offered two night packages with the casino dinner and a brunch for guests on 1 January.
- Vila Vita Parc. A black tie gala with fireworks last year.
- Conrad Algarve, W Algarve and Quinta do Lago. All ran their own New Year parties or dinners for 2025/26. Prices for this year are not out.

What the Portuguese do at midnight
The tradition is twelve raisins, one for each chime of midnight, with a wish for each. In Spain it is grapes, here it is raisins, and most people wash them down with sparkling wine. In the first week of January, groups called charolas go round singing New Year verses in the villages around Faro, Tavira and Olhão. In 2026 there was a gathering in Bordeira on the afternoon of 1 January.
Getting there and getting home
31 December is not a public holiday in Portugal, but it behaves like a half day. Supermarkets close early on Christmas Eve and the big chains usually do the same on the 31st and stay shut on 1 January, so shop in the morning and check your local store's hours.
Do not plan on the train to get home. CP runs a reduced service from late afternoon on 31 December and a holiday timetable on 1 January, and last year the late evening trains between Lagos, Faro and Vila Real de Santo António did not run on New Year's Eve. We could not find holiday timetables for the Vamus buses either. That leaves driving, a pre-booked taxi, or staying within walking distance, which is the option we would choose. If you are driving in, the A22 motorway has had no tolls since January 2025.
If you are flying in for the party, you will land at Faro airport, and it is worth booking an airport transfer ahead for these dates.
New Year's Day
1 January is a public holiday and the Algarve sleeps in. Expect the big supermarkets to be closed, and book lunch if you want to eat out. The weather is usually kind enough for a walk on the beach, with an average high of about 16 °C in January.
The local way to clear your head is a swim. Armação de Pêra has held a charity dip on New Year's morning for over twenty years, from 10:30 to 12:00, with people going in wearing pyjamas. First swims have also been held in Quarteira and Ferragudo in past years. None of them is confirmed for 1 January 2027 yet. Then, if you are in Albufeira, the Carolina Deslandes concert at sunset is a gentle way to end the day.
