Christmas in the Algarve 2026: weather, markets and what to do in December
Contents
December is the quiet month in the Algarve, and that is the reason a lot of people like it. The beaches are empty, the light is low and golden by mid afternoon, and every town hall puts up lights, an ice rink or a Santa's house in the main square. It is not a white Christmas and nobody pretends it is. You get lunch outside in a jumper on a good day, a nativity scene made of salt, and a proper party on the beach a week later for New Year's Eve in the Algarve.
One thing to know before you plan anything: as of early October, no Algarve council has published its 2026 Christmas programme. Last year most of them announced between mid November and early December. So the dates below are what ran in 2025, which is the best guide to what will happen again, and we will update this page as the 2026 programmes come out.
Algarve weather in December
The official climate normal for Faro (IPMA, 1991 to 2020) gives December an average daily high of 17.1 °C and an average low of 9.7 °C. The record high for the month is 23.1 °C. January is a touch cooler, with 16.3 °C by day and 8.3 °C at night.
It does rain. The same normal shows 90 mm for the month, spread over about 7 days with measurable rain, and around 3 of those are properly wet days with 10 mm or more. Long term averages put the chance of a wet day at roughly one in four through December, and the sky is cloudy a bit less than half the time. In practice that tends to mean a couple of grey, wet spells with bright days in between, rather than drizzle every day. December 2025 was reported as one of the wetter ones of recent years, so pack a waterproof and do not count on a full week of sun.
- Daytime: about 17 °C on average. A T-shirt in the sun at lunchtime, a jumper in the shade.
- Nights: about 10 °C. Ask whether your accommodation has heating.
- Sea temperature: about 18 °C at the start of the month, falling to about 17 °C by the end.
- Daylight: the shortest day is around 9 hours 37 minutes. On Christmas Day in Faro the sun rises at about 07:43 and sets at about 17:20. Portugal is on the same clock as the UK.
Christmas markets and events, town by town
There is no single big Algarve Christmas market. Each town runs its own small village, usually free, usually built around an ice rink and a Santa's house, and aimed at local families as much as visitors. These are the 2025 dates.
| Town | Event | 2025 dates | What was there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Albufeira | Albufeira Natal | 12 to 24 Dec | Ice rink, Santa's house, craft stalls, by the Mercado dos Caliços |
| Faro | Lights and Natal na Baixa | Lights 21 Nov to 6 Jan | Santa's house, music and street acts in the centre |
| Loulé | Aldeia dos Sonhos | 29 Nov to 6 Jan | Christmas village, 22 metre snowman in Praça da República |
| Lagos | Lagos, Baía do Natal | 29 Nov to 10 Jan | Ice rink, sled track, mini Ferris wheel, market stalls |
| Portimão | Um Sonho de Natal | 1 Dec to 6 Jan | Free ice rink, riverside market, Christmas train |
| Tavira | Christmas and New Year craft shows | 29 Nov to 4 Jan | Crafts, Santa's house, afternoon concerts |

| Olhão | Aldeia de Natal | 13 to 21 Dec | Craft and food stalls, mulled wine, carousels |
| Monchique | Mercado de Natal | 12 to 21 Dec | Crafts and regional food at Largo dos Chorões |
Albufeira at Christmas
In 2025 the main event, Albufeira Natal, ran from 12 to 24 December, and the council moved it out of the old town to the area next to the Mercado Municipal dos Caliços. It had an ice rink, a Santa's house, craft stalls and street entertainment, open from 15:00 to 20:00 on weekdays and from 10:00 to 20:00 at weekends. You will see blogs listing an Albufeira Christmas market on Praça dos Pescadores for last year. The council's own agenda says otherwise, so check the official programme before you walk down there. Whether it goes back to the old town in 2026 has not been announced.
Around Albufeira there were also small weekend markets in Ferreiras and Olhos de Água, and a street nativity in Guia that is worth a stop: 30 large figures by the British sculptor Toin Adams, set out between the chapel and the parish church from November until 6 January.
Faro and Loulé
Faro switched its lights on at Praça da Liberdade on 21 November 2025 and kept them lit from 17:30 to 01:00 every night until 6 January. The programme proper began a week later, when Santa arrived at Jardim Manuel Bívar on a fire engine and paraded to his house in the pedestrian centre. There was music, dance and street theatre in the Baixa until Christmas Eve.
Loulé is the one families tend to drive to. Its Christmas village is called Aldeia dos Sonhos, and the council runs sister events in Quarteira and Almancil. The 2025 programme went from 29 November to 6 January and added a 22 metre snowman in Praça da República. In earlier years the Loulé village had an eco ice rink, a slide and a carousel, and it closed on Mondays.
Lagos and Portimão
Lagos calls its season Lagos, Baía do Natal. In 2025 Praça do Infante had Santa's house, market stalls, a sled track, an ice rink and a mini Ferris wheel from 29 November to 24 December, and an animated nativity stayed open until 10 January.
Portimão spread its programme, Um Sonho de Natal, across three squares linked by a Christmas train, from 1 December to 6 January. The ice rink and Santa's house were at Praça da República and the market was down on the riverside at the old fish auction. Entry and every activity were free, the ice rink included.
Tavira, Olhão and the east
Tavira keeps it low key, with craft shows at Jardim das Palmeiras from late November to early January, a Santa's house at the bandstand garden and afternoon concerts at the Mercado da Ribeira. Olhão had a short Christmas village from 13 to 21 December 2025 with craft and food stalls, mulled wine and live music.
The two things to cross the region for are right by the Spanish border. In Vila Real de Santo António the Presépio Gigante is a nativity scene covering 240 square metres. The 2025 edition, the 23rd, reached 6,000 figures for the first time, with around 100 moving pieces, more than 20 tonnes of sand and 3,000 kg of cork, and it includes local scenes such as the salt pans and the old Monte Gordo beach huts. It ran from 29 November to 6 January at the Centro Cultural António Aleixo, cost €1 from age 4, and opened on Christmas Day too. The council's page on the nativity has the details, and the 2026 dates should appear there.
Just to the north, Castro Marim builds a nativity out of salt from its own salt pans at the Casa do Sal. The 2024 edition used more than 3 tonnes of salt and 700 figures, and local reports say the 2025 one was much bigger. It normally runs from 1 December to 6 January.
Monchique, Silves and Lagoa
Up in the hills, Monchique held a Christmas market from 12 to 21 December 2025 with crafts and regional food. Silves had an ice rink, a carousel and a market in Praça Al-Muthamid in the 2024 season, free to enter and closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. The resort areas also have charity and craft fairs that the expat community turns out for, such as the Vale do Lobo Christmas Market, which was on its 15th edition in early December 2025.
What locals do at Christmas
The Portuguese Christmas happens on the evening of 24 December, not on the 25th. The season runs from 8 December to 6 January, and the big family meal is the Consoada on Christmas Eve, followed by midnight mass (Missa do Galo) for those who go. Today the standard dish all over Portugal is boiled salt cod with potatoes and cabbage.
The older Algarve version was plainer. Ordinary homes ate a pot of cabbage or of maize porridge, and richer ones had roast meats and sausages. Christmas Day meant a cockerel that had been picked and fattened for months, known as the Galo do Natal, and on the coast some families ate dried salted dogfish.
The sweets are where the Algarve is different from the rest of the country. Look in bakery windows for filhós (fried dough), fatias douradas (a kind of French toast), bolos de mel, fig and almond sweets, dons-rodrigos, and empanadilhas, which are little fried pastries usually filled with sweet potato. You will also see bolo-rei, the ring-shaped fruit cake, everywhere until 6 January.
The traditional Algarve nativity is not a stable scene. The baby Jesus stands on a stepped throne decorated with oranges, myrtle and small pots of wheat that families sprout from 8 December. You can still see these in churches and parish halls.
Charolas in early January
If you are staying past New Year, try to hear the charolas. These are groups that go round singing to the baby Jesus for New Year and Epiphany, with accordion, castanets and tambourines, a banner, and improvised verses wishing people a good year. In January 2026 there were gatherings in Bordeira near Faro on 1 and 6 January, in Tavira and Moncarapacho on the first Sunday of the month, and at the Teatro das Figuras in Faro on the Sunday after Epiphany. They are free, and the pattern is much the same every year.
What is open on 24 and 25 December
Plan Christmas Eve like a half day. In 2025 Continente, Pingo Doce, Lidl and Aldi closed at 18:00 on 24 December, Auchan at 17:00 and Mercadona at 19:00. Every big supermarket chain was closed on the 25th. Neither 24 nor 26 December is a public holiday in Portugal, so Boxing Day is an ordinary working day.
Restaurants are the thing to sort out early. Many places in the resort towns sell a set Christmas Day lunch by booking only, and some close altogether from the 24th to the 26th. Do not trust the prices that turn up in search results, because the widely quoted list is from 2020. Ring or email the restaurant, and browse our guide to eating out in the Algarve for ideas.
The big parks are shut. Zoomarine closes for the winter, and its 2026 season only began on 12 March. Slide & Splash runs from 1 April to 31 October. The giant nativity in Vila Real de Santo António is one of the few attractions that opened on Christmas Day in 2025, from 10:00 to 13:00 and 15:00 to 19:00.
For something very British and very cold, Armação de Pêra has had a charity swim on Christmas morning for more than twenty years, with people going into the sea in Santa suits between 10:30 and 12:00. We could not confirm the 2026 swim yet, so ask locally. There is more on the town on our Armação de Pêra page.
Things to do in the Algarve in December
Winter is the best time for the coast on foot. The cliffs around Praia da Marinha and the other well known beaches are almost empty, and you can park where you would never find a space in August. Boat trips to Benagil cave do run in winter with some operators, but they depend on the swell and are often cancelled, so keep that plan flexible. Since August 2024 nobody is allowed to land on the sand inside the cave or swim into it.
On a wet day, the Christmas villages in Loulé, Portimão and Lagos fill an afternoon with children, and the two nativities in the east make a good day trip with lunch in Tavira on the way back.
Getting there and getting around
Faro airport handles flights from the UK all winter. Jet2's website lists winter 2026/27 flights from 13 UK airports, and Ryanair, easyJet, British Airways, TUI and Wizz Air also fly to Faro. Check your exact dates, because winter schedules are thinner than summer ones.
A hire car makes December much easier, since buses and trains thin out over the holidays. The A22 motorway that runs the length of the Algarve has been toll free since 1 January 2025. If you need one, see our page on car hire at Faro airport. On the regional railway, CP runs a reduced service from late afternoon on 24 and 31 December and a holiday timetable on 25 December and 1 January, and last year several late evening and early morning trains between Lagos, Faro and Vila Real de Santo António were cancelled on those days.
Where to stay at Christmas
Pick a town that has something going on in December rather than a pure summer resort. Going by last year's programmes, Albufeira, Faro, Lagos, Portimão, Tavira, Loulé and Quarteira all had events through the month. Several of the big resort hotels also ran their own Christmas programmes in 2025, among them Tivoli Marina Vilamoura, Vila Vita Parc, Pine Cliffs, Conrad Algarve, W Algarve and Quinta do Lago.
If you want marina restaurants within walking distance, look at Vilamoura. For a real town with a market and a train station, Tavira and Lagos are the easy choices. Our Algarve hotels guide covers the main areas, and whatever you book, ask about heating.
